• assess: determine, find out, lay down, establish

• endeavour: shot, experiment, proof, trial, test, attempt

• tig: tag, hare and hounds, (A children's game in which one player pursues the others until he or she is able to touch one of them, who then in turn becomes the pursuer.)

Playing with words

Have you thought of using poetry to improve your vocabulary? It is surely a fun way of learning new words. Here are the reasons why I think it is so EZ to learn new words through writing poetry:

• It's a good way to learn synonyms. I never work with an isolated, remote word. To express a feeling I like having several options at first, and make the final selection later. This way I have the original word and at least two or three other synonyms to choose from.
• Depending on what I intend to say, I can choose a stronger, more intense word from a group of synonyms. Examples: dry-thirsty, loss-deprivation, wish-want, blue-downcast.
• It is also fun to look for rhymes. Example: auspicious-delicious (auspicious = bright, golden, hopeful)

Thankful expressions from my blog entry "A so-wished award"

We usually say thanks on the simple way of "Thanks!", but as I wanted my blog entry, "A so-wished award" to be based on "acknowledgements", I had to look for synonyms of saying thanks.

• to be grateful to sy for sg: hálásnak lenni (vkinek vmiért), nagyon köszönni vmit
• to be obliged to sy for sg: lekötelezettje vkinek, igen hálásnak lenni. I'm much obliged: nagyon köszönöm
• to greatly appreciate sg: nagyra becsülni vmit
  
• to express one's gratitude to sy (for sg): kifejezi a háláját vkinek (vmiért).
• to recognize sy (e.g. a company) for sg: elismer, méltányol, értékel

Hi everyone!
I would like to give you some useful expressions from my latest blog entry, Theatre or whatever. I think I managed to put more unknown words in it than needed, but actually I wrote it in Hungarian first.

• to dull: 'eltompul'. jaded, blunt, numb: 'tompa', 'eltompult'
• to stand to lose: to be about to lose. 'vesztésre áll'
• shackle: a cramp, a hobble. 'béklyó'
• to quell: to oppress, to keep down 'elnyom'
